9/23/19: Claire Frechette -- What is this thing called an 'Elliptic Curve?'
Abstract: Number theory is a field populated by many strange and wonderful creatures, among them the elusive Elliptic Curve. In this talk, we'll explore what this mathematical beastie looks like, where it comes from, and why number theorists seem to care so much about it. This talk will be accessible to everyone, including first years, and will hopefully give you a sense of why number theory is so magical.
